Continual Improvement – Identify Opportunity

• Identify the opportunity present
• Define the problem and outline the opportunity in the process workflow
• Assess operational challenges and opportunities for improvement 

Continual Improvement – Plan

• Brainstorm ideas
• Identify the objectives and the desired outcome
• Assess how the current process can be improved
• Develop an improvement plan based on the identified needs and priorities

Continual Improvement – Do

• Now that a possible solution has been identified we need to implement this plan and the identified changes
• Conduct the implementation by balancing priorities and resources available

Continual Improvement – Check

• Monitor the changes and test
• Compare the desired objectives and outcome with those outlined in the planning stage
• Evaluate how the changes are working for the team
• Obtain and review feedback from the users
• If the expected outcome was not achieved, start the cycle over again.

Post Implementation Assessment

A post-implementation assessment or review will

• Measure the performance against predefined requirements.
• Determine how well the system continues to meet performance specifications.
• Evaluate the system in terms of
  • The extent to which the system accomplished stated objectives
  • Monitored and maintained actual costs in relation to the initial cost estimates.

Analyze major problems that need converting and those that surfaced during the implementation phase. 

• Compare employee/team performance before and after training
• Reaction – Satisfaction indicators?
• Learning – What was learned?
• Transfer – Skills applied?
• Results – Business improvements?

As was stated before, Maintenance Management is all about continually improving the maintenance function with the objective of taking the facility on a journey towards world-class status recognition. Continual Improvement is a vital and necessary cog in this process.
